Super skills

Elmwood Infant School is committed to providing an inclusive and nurturing learning environment that supports the well-being and personal development of all pupils. To achieve this, we have established a clear set of Super Skills which act as learning behaviours that guide children in all aspects of school life. These Super Skills help shape the culture of our school and support children to become confident learners and positive members of the community.

Our Super Skills are embedded throughout the curriculum and daily school life. They support children’s personal development and are closely linked to British Values, helping pupils to become kind, responsible and respectful citizens. By consistently promoting and reinforcing these skills, we create an environment that supports personal growth, positive relationships and a strong sense of community.

How Super Skills are taught at Elmwood Infant School

At Elmwood Infant School, Super Skills are taught through a fun and engaging animal character theme, helping children to understand each skill in an age‑appropriate and memorable way. Each animal represents a specific Super Skill and models the behaviour we want children to learn and use.

Stories about the animal characters allow children to explore emotions, behaviours and real-life situations in a safe and supportive way, helping them make links to their own experiences. Each Super Skill is introduced through a dedicated whole‑school assembly, where children learn what the skill means, why it is important and how it can be used in school and everyday life.

Super Skills are reinforced daily through positive interactions, classroom learning, playtimes and discussions. Rhymes and chants introduced in assemblies support children in learning and remembering key vocabulary, while rewards linked to each Super Skill encourage children to practise and embed these behaviours.
