School Improvement Priorities for 2025–26
At Elmwood Infant School, we want every child to feel happy, confident and ready for the next stage of their learning. This year, we are focusing on four key areas to help all pupils make strong progress.
1. Strengthening Early Reading (Phonics)
We are working to ensure every child becomes a confident early reader.
This includes:
- improving the consistency of phonics teaching in every class
- reading with children every day
- checking children’s reading regularly so we can spot gaps early
- giving pupils at risk of falling behind extra daily reading sessions
- providing rapid support to help children keep up
What this means for your child:
Higher‑quality reading practice, well‑matched books and tailored support where needed.
2. Improving Outcomes in Reception (Early Years)
We want more children to leave Reception with strong early skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing and maths.
We are:
- improving the classroom and outdoor learning environments
- focusing on essential early language, writing and number skills
- using consistent routines that help children settle quickly and learn independently
What this means for your child:
A smoother start to school and stronger foundations for Year 1 learning.
3. Developing Leadership Across the School
Strong and effective leadership helps us maintain high standards and continue improving the quality of education we offer.
This year, we are:
- strengthening leadership roles so staff can take more responsibility across the school
- providing training and support to help leaders grow in confidence
- creating time for leaders to work together on school improvement
- developing shared approaches so expectations are clear for everyone
What this means for your child:
A more consistent, well‑organised school where teaching and support remain strong across all classes.
4. Improving Attendance
Good attendance is essential for learning. It helps children feel settled, make friends and enjoy their learning.
This year, we are:
- strengthening our approach to supporting families when attendance becomes difficult
- keeping a closer eye on patterns of absence so we can offer help earlier
- creating a welcoming start to the day through nurture support and positive routines
What this means for your child:
More time in school to enjoy lessons, make progress and build the strong learning habits they need for future success.
