New Phonics Pages: This section of our website is being fully redeveloped. If the phonics phase you are looking for is empty, please check back in a few days and check again. We are aiming to have this section ready as soon as possible.
At Elmwood Infant School, we have been working hard to improve phonics for our children. We plan for phonics using the Letters and Sounds document and have created our own unique set of sounds, phrases and actions for all of the phonemes. We have also created our own set of visual resources to support the children using carefully selected images that match an action for the phoneme and song or phrase. These resources are consistently used in the Early Years and across Key Stage 1. Please see each phase for further support with vocabulary, phonemes that will be taught and resources to help support parents and children at home.
Phonics is taught daily across the school from 9.15-9.45. Within each phonics lesson, the children revise previously learnt phonemes and their corresponding graphemes before moving on to learning a new sound. Once the children have learnt the new sound, they spend time practising this sound through a range of activities and then applying their new understanding by either decoding and blending for reading or segmenting for writing.
