Rights Respecting School
Putting Children First
At Elmwood Infant School, children's rights are at the heart of everything we do. Every decision we make begins with one simple question:
"What is in the best interests of our children?"
We are proud to have achieved the UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School Award, the highest level of recognition awarded by UNICEF UK. This recognises schools where children's rights are embedded throughout school life, creating a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where every child can flourish.
What This Means for Your Child
Children learn about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in age-appropriate ways throughout their time at Elmwood. They develop an understanding of their own rights, learn to respect the rights of others and discover how they can make a positive contribution to their school and the wider world.
Rights are woven through our curriculum, assemblies and wider school life. Throughout the year, children explore important themes through events such as Black History Month, Children's Mental Health Week, Anti-Bullying Week and charity initiatives. Each month, we also focus on a different Article of the Month, helping children understand how rights relate to everyday life.
Articles That Guide Our School
Article 3
The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all decisions and actions that affect children.
Article 29
Education should help every child develop their personality, talents and abilities to the fullest, while learning to respect human rights, other people, different cultures and the environment.
These principles reflect our vision of nurturing confident learners, building strong foundations and inspiring bright futures.
Being a Rights Respecting School is more than an award, it is part of our everyday life. It shapes our learning, our relationships and our commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, valued and able to thrive.
