Geography
At Elmwood Infant School, we want our children to be curious about the world around them and excited to discover more about the people, places and environments that make our world so special. We follow the Kapow Primary Geography scheme from Reception to Year 2. Through fun, engaging and practical experiences, children develop their understanding of the world and begin to think like young geographers.
Our Geography curriculum encourages children to explore, observe, ask questions and make connections between their own experiences and the wider world. Children will have the opportunity to use resources such as maps, photographs and globes.
In the Early Years
Children explore their immediate environment, talk about familiar places, notice seasonal and weather changes, and begin to use simple geographical vocabulary.
Year 1
Children develop their understanding of maps, places and environments. They explore the UK and other parts of the world and begin to identify human and physical features.
Year 2
Children build on their knowledge by comparing different places, developing their map skills and learning about continents, oceans, countries and different environments.
We hope that through geography at Elmwood, our children develop a sense of wonder about the world, a desire to explore it and an understanding of their place within it.
How to support Geography at home
Parents/ carers can support Geography by talking about places you visit, looking at maps, discussing the weather and seasons, and encouraging children to notice and talk about the world around them.
We want every child to become a confident, curious and enthusiastic explorer of the world!
