Music

At Elmwood Infant School, we believe that music is an important part of every child’s education. It provides opportunities for children to express themselves creatively, develop confidence and communication skills, and experience the joy of making music together.

We follow the Sing Up Music scheme from Nursery through to Year 2, providing a consistent and progressive approach to music teaching across the school. Through carefully planned lessons, children develop their singing, listening, performing and composing skills while exploring a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions.

From their earliest experiences in Nursery, children are encouraged to join in with songs, rhymes, actions and musical games. As they progress through Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, they build on these foundations, developing their musical vocabulary, keeping a steady beat, exploring rhythm and pitch, and learning to perform with increasing confidence.

Children have regular opportunities to sing and make music together, as well as to listen and respond to music. We also offer an after-school choir for our Year 2 children, who regularly perform for the school community.

We are pleased to offer peripatetic music lessons for Reception and Key Stage 1 children. Lessons are available in piano and guitar and can be delivered on an individual basis or in small groups, helping children develop their musical skills, confidence and enjoyment of music.

We aim to nurture a lifelong enjoyment of music and ensure that every child has the opportunity to discover their own musical voice.

Through our music curriculum, we want children to leave Elmwood Infant School as confident, enthusiastic and creative young musicians, with a strong foundation on which to continue their musical journey.
