Our Trip to Parliament
After her visit to our school last term, Sarah Jones, our local MP, kindly invited the School Council to visit Parliament for a special tour. The children were incredibly excited right from the start of the journey, which included two tube trains and lots of very long escalators!
When we arrived at Westminster, it was exactly 11 o’clock, and we were thrilled to hear the famous bells of Big Ben ringing out – wow! Entering Parliament felt very important, as security was tight and just like going through an airport.
We enjoyed our lunch in the Parliament café, where Sarah Jones came to say hello and spend some time talking with us about her job and the work of Parliament. After lunch, we went into the magnificent Westminster Hall, where we were amazed to learn that it is around 900 years old. While we were there, we also saw a fascinating art installation linked to the tides of the River Thames, with lights that change throughout the day.
One of the most exciting moments of the visit was meeting the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, which made our trip feel even more special.
We then sat in St Stephen’s Hall, a place full of history. We learnt how suffragettes protested there in the fight for women to gain the right to vote, and how Parliament played a key role in ending slavery.
It was an unforgettable day, full of learning, history and excitement, and one we will all remember for a long time.
