Welcome from our Headteacher, Mr Cooper

Thank you for visiting the Elmwood Infant School website. Elmwood Infant School is a popular four-form entry infant school catering for children ages 3-7 in the West Croydon and Broad Green areas.

The school is close to West Croydon train station and tram stop and a short work form Croydon University Hospital. The school is a feeder school to Elmwood Junior School which we share the site with.

I am Croydon born, bred and educated and started my teaching career here back in 1994. So leading Elmwood Infant School has given me a special opportunity to serve and give back to my own community.

I chose to work at Elmwood Infant School because of its inclusivity and values. The school celebrates, not only the diversity of our community, but the global community too. Over fifty languages are spoken in the Elmwood Infant community. This is reflected in our curriculum and our policies which you can access on this website. Elmwood Infant School is a Rights Respecting School. This means that the UNICEF Rights of the Child are embedded in all that we do. I am proud to say that Elmwood Infants currently holds a Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. We also have our ten Super Skills which run alongside these rights which support our children with their learning and their learning behaviour. In 2017, Elmwood Infant School was awarded the Jo Cox memorial award in recognition of the work we do on individuality and the uniqueness of every child. We have also won a prize in the Show Racism the Red Card competition for the past thirteen years.

Our children are achieving well in reading, writing and mathematics. Elmwood pupils make excellent progress from their starting points.

Special Educational Needs is another strength at Elmwood Infants. We have just opened our specialist SEND provision which is already full! For further information on SEND at Elmwood Infants, please visit our SEND Information Report which can be found on this website.

At Elmwood Infants we value the partnership between home and school. We appreciate that visiting the school had not been possible under COVID-19 restrictions. However, the school has returned to providing opportunities for adult learning (CALAT courses), fund-raising and regular curriculum meetings on teaching and learning.

A copy of the school’s priorities for this academic year will be available on this site.

If you are an existing parent, then we look forward to continuing our partnership this year and if you are a prospective parent, then we hope you will consider Elmwood Infants as your future first choice.

Thank you

Wayne Cooper
